Chapter One
It was a wonderfully chilly Fall day. What made it so wonderful was the fact that I was on Fall break. The terrible thang that made this (almost) perfect mornin’ bad was that I was absolutely bored, not that I didn’t have nothin’ to do. It was just that nothin’ ever happened in the small town of West Jefferson.
So what do I do when I need gossip about our fellow townspeople? I go to my gossip-obsessive Momma.
I peek into the livin’ room were Momma is doing a work out video on the VCR.
“You need somethin’ honey?” My momma says as she is wiping her forehead with her sweat band after doing some tiresome high-kicks.I look her up and down squintin’ after being giving a serious overdose of neon.
“Wow mom!” I say trying not to laugh at how ridiculous she looks right now with the neon leg warmers, bright pink leotard put over some leopard print leggings(I have always thought that this trend is ridiculous).
“So I was wonderin' if anythin' new has happ-”
“Let me just finish this workout first, okay honey?” My momma says in the middle of another high-kick.
I scowl as I walk out of the room, I’m very disappointed.
So I decide that I have nothing better to do so I start to walk over to cousin Ben’s house.
When I finally arrive there I knock on my Aunt’s door but decide that I am not in the mood for awaitin’so I walk inside anyway.
After doing a bit of searchin’ I find Ben sitting on the couch reading another “Hardy Boys” book. One of the things that my cousin and I have in common is that we are both obsessed with reading mysteries.I flop on the couch in a spot right next to him.
“Oh hey.” He replies in an unsurprised tone(I do this alot).
“Ugh, I am so bored!” I replied, desperately trying to think of something to do.
“Well we could always go by the library,” Ben said looking up from his book and folding down the page.
“Why not,I could use a few more books.” I say gettin’ up from the couch.
Then, Ben’s mom walked in carrying a laundry basket. “Oh hey Amy, where are ya’ll goin’?”
“To the library,”Ben explained opening the door.
“Oh, well it would really helpful if you could run by the grocery store and pick up some bread and peanut butter.” Ben’s mom said, handin’ me some money to buy the food as we walked out of the door.
After a couple minutes of walkin’ Ben and I stood outside the library doors.
“Aww man, I forgot that it’s closed on Sundays.” Ben said sadly after tryin’ to open the locked doors.
“Well it looks like we are going to have to go get some groceries.” I said walking towards the town’s only grocery store , “Piggly Wiggly”.
After we had gotten our groceries we headed for the checkout line which had one man in front of us that was having a conversation with the cashier.
“Your total is $10.75.” The cashier said smiling at the man.
The man got out a crisp ten dollar bill and some change out of his wrinkle free dress pants.
“Thank you! Are you new in town?” The nosy cashier asked the formally dressed man as she put the money in the cash register.
“I am new, my family and I just moved in yesterday.” The man said quickly picking up his bags.
“Excuse me sir, but do you mind if you could tell me your name?” I asked the man curiously.
Surprised, the man turned around and replied so fast that I almost didn’t even catch what he said, “My name is Jason Clark.” The man than turned around and left the store.
This man stood out for’ sure,I would’ve thought that he would have changed out of his church clothes by now. His reluctance to share his name was also very odd. I thought to myself.

On our way home a familiar building came into view.
“Do you want to go see my dad, maybe he will have some news about what’s happenin’.” I asked, but decided not to wait for an answer so I stepped in the building and held out the door for my cousin.
“Hey how are ya’ll doing Have you heard the news yet?” My dad’s secretary, Mr. Peirce mentioned without even looking up from his paperwork as we walked in.
I jumped up from the chair that I had just plopped on to. “What news?!” I exclaimed.
“Well a new family moved in an-”
“Hey Amy, whatcha doing here? Oh, hey Ben.” My dad said exiting his office.
“Has anything new happened?” I questioned my dad to see if he knew about the new family too.
“Well, nothing except for that disgusting new coke recipe.” My dad mentioned looking at the coke bottle on his assistants desk.
“Daad, I am being serious here!” I whined.
“Hey, I happen to like the new recipe.” Mr. Pierce said defensively, cutting into our conversation.
“Are those you all’s ?” My dad asked making a gesture towards the corner of the room where we set down our groceries.
“I guess we better get going.” My cousin suggested.
I knew that both my dad and Mr. Pierce would just end up watching Ronald Reagan give speeches, but I decided to let it go and followed Ben outside the building.

I woke up to the wonderful smell of a cheddar grits. Realizing that I had actually slept in past 7:00 am. (I found it pretty hard to sleep in). I got up from my bed and went downstairs for some delicious grits.
“Hey, your grits are going’ to get cold.” My momma told me without even looking up from the newspaper. I grumbled a good mornin’ to my momma and sat down at our wooden kitchen table to start a- eatin’. I thought about makin’ another round ‘cause I usually prefer makin’ it on my own but I was starvin’ so I ate it anyways. “Have you seen my belt honey?” My dad said as he walked into the kitchen obviously in a hissy fit ‘bout somethin’. “I have been called into work early since Mark(Mr. Pierce) has to take care of his sick daughter.” My dad said again before my momma could reply. After my dad made his rounds lookin’ for his belt he finally realized that I was there and said good mornin’. “Didn’t you leave your belt at the office like you always do?” I questioned my father. “Oh yeah I reckon you’re right, I guess I was just so surprised that somethan’ actually happened here.” My head popped up from “Nacy Drew And The Hidden Staircase”. “Somethin’ happened!” I jumped up and asked my dad if I could go to work with him it took a little convincin’(I had to wash the dishes tonight even though it was my night yesterday). My dad eventually agreed and I changed out of my PJ’s into my Sunday best since this was a special occasion. On our way to the scene I found out that the library books had been sabotaged! I was as happy as a pig in mud that somethin’ had happened. Once we got there we found the very dramatic librarian, Ms. Hanegen pitching a fit. “Oh My GOSH thank goodness you came I thought that I was going to DIE!”Ms. Hanegen exclaimed running over to us(well more like trotting over to us because the women was quite plump). “Well you are here and very much alive.” My father said calmly after giving me a look. My father was never a big fan of her ever since she called him to her house to get her cat down from the tree while his favorite team, the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl. “Pardon me, But could you please tell us what happened?” I said making sure to have the calmest voice possible, it was very important to be calm when talking to Ms. Hanegen. Ms. Hanegen explained dramatically that library’s books had been covered in a very sticky solution. “Were there any people at the library when this happened?” My father questioned the librarian. “Well, yes there was a very handsome man. He kept lookin’ over his shoulder as if he was doing somethin’ he wasn’t supposed to .I think he said that his name was Jason Clock? He seemed sus-” “Jason Clark, I believe I overheard him talkin’ to the cashier at the grocery store.” I interrupted. My dad cleared his throat. “Can we go in and have a look?” He asked. “I guess, anything to solve that darn crime.” she says in her dramatic southern accent and acts as if she is about to swipe sweat off of her extremely round forehead. “Oh I hope ya’ll can get can to the bottom of this!” She added. We entered the large oak doors and saw the nasty gooey substance covering half of both the books and the book shelves. I walked up to the nearest bookshelf, and touched the mysterious substance. It was a mixture between a solid and liquid and had neon green color. The goo smelled like walkin’ into a pig farm. “Hey dad,” I asked “have you heard anything new from Mr. Pierce recently?” “No I haven’t, the last time I heard ‘bout him was when his wife told me that he was goin’ to his dad's funeral.” My dad said while he was inspectin’ the goo. “Wait, didn't you tell me that he said he had to take care of his sick daughter?” I questioned him. “You’re right, Now that I think about it his story’s just don’t add up!” My dad said looking up from the goo that covered the books almost entirely. “Do you think that he’s still here?” Said Ms. Hanegen said in her purely southern accent. I hadn’t even realized that Ms. Hanegen had been inside the library this whole time. It surprised me that she had been so quiet due to her rather large figure. Than, out of the corner of my eye I saw a figure. I whipped my head around only to see a person with a clown mask on,simply wave goodbye to me and walk out of the building, closing the door with a loud click that caused my dad and the librarian to turn around to see what the fuss was ‘bout. I rushed to the large oak doors, I pushed as hard as I could only to find that they were locked. “Guy’s,I think we’re locked out!” I said as panic creeped over my body. “Oh no worries I should have a key right he- Oh My GOSH THE KEY AIN’T HERE!!” Ms. Hanegen exclaimed leaning on her desk as if she couldn’t support her own weight. “Dad, How are we goin’ to get out?” I said worriedly as I looked up at my dad. “Well I don’ really know how.” My father replied. To Be Continued....
